# 教会の椅子、日常のインテリア｜チャーチチェアの魅力

今回ご紹介するのは、英国製のビンテージチャーチチェア。私にとって、単なる座る場所以上の魅力をもつお気に入りの椅子のひとつです。デザイナーズ家具と違い、多くは作者不詳。そのため「チャーチチェア」と一括りで紹介されることが多いのですが、色や形は実にさまざま。よくみると個々に表情があって、好みの一脚をみつける楽しみがあります。
英国製のビンテージチャーチチェア
私たちが普段撮る写真には２種類あります。ひとつは日常のスナップショット、もうひとつは最初から「作品」として意識して作り込むもの。特に後者の写真には、チャーチチェアが頻繁に登場し、その存在が作品の雰囲気を高めてくれています。今回はチャーチチェアの魅力を、私たちの写真を交えながらご紹介できればと思います。

## チャーチチェアの特徴と魅力
チャーチチェアをはじめて目にしたのは学生時代。当時足繁く通っていた神戸のトリトンカフェでのことです。少しづつ形の違うチャーチチェアが、大きなテーブルを囲むように置いてあったのが印象的でした。そのカフェに通うたびに座る場所を変え、それぞれの椅子の座り心地を確かめるのがひそかな楽しみでもありました。
このチャーチチェアには、聖書を収納するための背面ポケットや、長時間の礼拝中も快適に過ごせるように考えられた特別な「座ぐり」の形状など、教会のニーズに合わせた独特の工夫が施されています。椅子の表面は、ところどころ変形しているところも。人の手を伝って長く大切に使われてきた様子が伺えます。
長い間座っても疲れないようにと、掘り込まれた座ぐり。何年経っているの？と聞きたくなるほど味わいのある雰囲気です
## 英国の教会の変遷とチャーチチェア
国内ビンテージ家具店の店頭に数多く並ぶチャーチチェアの姿をときどき見かけます。どこかの教会にあったものがまとめて日本に入ってきたと言わんばかりの雰囲気。私が手に入れたときも、雑貨店にもかかわらず、大量のチャーチチェアが店頭に並んでいました。
英国では、最盛期に2万近くあった教会が、現在はそのうち2千件あまりの教会が閉鎖され、いまでも減少傾向にあると伝えられています。ときどき大量にみかけるチャーチチェアも、このことと少なからず、無縁では無い気がします。

## コーヒータイムとチャーチチェア
この椅子が映り込む私たちの作品は、かならず漆黒の壁と温かみのあるチャーチチェアという対比的な構成になります。室内は暗く、右手にチャーチチェア、その背面から届く外光という構図。テーブル上にはコーヒーカップのほか、ポットやケーキがならぶこともありますが、人は写り込まず、静かに佇むチャーチチェアとコーヒーが写るニミマムな写真ばかり。

個々に個性のある派手なデザイナーズチェアと比較すると、チャーチチェアはとても地味な印象があります。それでも、かえってそのことが隣り合う他の家具とも馴染みやすく、家に迎え入れたその日から、“日常的に使ってた感”をだしてくれるようにも思います。なにか味のある家具を考えている方がいたら、ぜひこのチャーチチェアを検討してみてください。
